Ellie Victoria Gale

This is the blog of Ellie Victoria Gale. Welcome and hello. It will feature predominantly the works, ideas, and ramblings of Ellie, also featuring photos of inspiration and pure fascination.
Simple self portrait taken in the studio from the other day. I haven’t taken a photo which I have been happy with in over a month, so it’s good to have something to show for once.
I keep saying that I need to take photos more but the ideas aren’t flowing, so I went back to what I know, and what I’m comfortable with just this once…

Photo by Brooke Shaden. I insist you have a look at her work, in fact her entire portfolio.

I DID IT, I FINALLY DID IT…I produced a photo which I am 100% happy about, after about a month of trying and trying and getting no where. It had been getting me down, and with my uni deadline looming, the pressure really hit me. I couldn’t be happier that I have ended a long day of shooting idea after idea, most of them not turning out as I hoped, that I end the day (well start a new day, technically) with another photo which may possibly end up in my femininity series.
I feel like I’m taking a step back a bit and producing photos which are a bit simpler, although I have no idea if that comes across to any one else, but it seems necessary. Maybe I was trying too hard, or maybe I’m just too much of a perfectionist, but I hope you enjoy this photo. Lets just hope it doesn’t take me as long to produce my next photo.

A self portrait taken tonight. As usual, I’m not sure of whether I am happy with this, but I’m sticking with it for now.

My first EVER attempt at something commercial. This is for a brief for uni where we need to create photos responding to an already existing brief for Tie Rack. Tie Rack will never see the images, and the products I used aren’t Tie Rack but apparently they didn’t need to be.

I’m not used to photographing in a style which is so commercial and it was a challenge. Originally I wanted to shoot outside but my battery pack for my lighting kit has broken so we had to shoot inside plugging the lights into the mains. Our photos have to be diverse and in a building surrounded by white walls, it was difficult to come up with shots so different, especially when I hadn’t planned on using this building. Anyway, I am so pleased with the way they came out as I didn’t think I’d be able to pull them off.

Many thanks to the wonderful Jess Hodkinson who kindly modelled for me and did a fantastic job, and also my dad who helped carry the equipment and waited around for me whilst I was shooting.

Miles Aldrigde…why have I only just heard about him recently? It’s always a joy finding new photographers because it’s new inspiration and another view on photography. I especially love finding photographers as crazy as Aldridge.

Bettina Rheims, what a wonderful photographer. She’s such an inspiration to me right now.

This photo made it onto the Photovogue homepage under the ‘Latest Pictures Selected’ heading. I honestly could not believe my eyes when I first found out but it’s definitely a big achievement for me. After uploading photos to Photovogue and seeing the work on there, it’s really given me that push to create higher quality work, both conceptually and aesthetically. At the moment my photography is centered around my final project at university, which has moved onto self portraiture. Seen as I am not a model, and quite frankly hate modelling in front of people, this has been a challenge, so I have been trying to use as little help as possible. After seeing the work of Brooke Shaden, Miss Aniela and Alex Stoddard though, it always made me want to try self portraiture, so this is my chance…

A self portrait taken for my femininity series. The series has taken a new route which will be self portraiture only. I’m not sure how I feel about a series of just me, but if it will improve the series and help it be strong and coherent then that’s just something I will have to do. Never did I think I’d be modelling for myself, and it’s certainly a challenge but fingers crossed that the hard work will pay off in the near future.

I’m having to reshoot many photos of others, to add me in them instead, so I’ll probably be uploading a lot of repeats and ideas that look familiar but there will be brand new concepts uploaded too. With only two months left to finish, I’ll have to really get working!

I’ve added a colour and black and white version as I’m unsure which I prefer. The colour will probably be used in the exhibition but the black and white is my aesthetic preference for this shot…

A new photo taken in Coffee Evolution, Huddersfield, England, UK for my current femininity series. The model was Tracey Burns and hair and makeup was done by Jane Armstrong.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I’m a little late with the New Years post…!! I have no idea what to expect with this year, as I graduate in a few months and don’t really know where to go from there. I still have so much to learn and don’t feel ready to go into the real world of photography just yet. I’ve gotten too comfortable with the bubble that is university. When I graduate though I plan on fitting in as many shoots as I can to build up my portfolio as I feel that I don’t pick up my camera enough at the moment. Maybe that could be a New Years resolution?

I hope you all enjoy 2012.
May it be a year filled with adventure and prosperity.

Merry Christmas to you all! As a ‘present’ I have posted a brand new photo for my Femininity project; currently a project without a title. May you all have a peaceful, safe and joyous Christmas.

A self portrait taken earlier today. It was taken for my final year photography project but I’m not sure if it will feature in it. A decided to upload it to Photovogue to see if they’d accept it…I do with most photos I take, and I was lucky enough for them to accept this photo!! It made me so happy that they’d accepted it, especially as I wasn’t sure of it in the first place.
The joy didn’t last too long though as this project is such a struggle for me. Trying to get models and locations is hard enough but the concepts behind each photo is the difficult part. I’m planning shoots as we speak though so hopefully I’ll have some more to show before Christmas. I can’t promise though…
